Attorney Ray-Leonetti begins her second term as the
co-chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association committee on
delivery of legal services to persons with disabilities. The
next meeting is March 2nd at 9 am, 1101 Market Street,
Philadelphia. The sign language interpreter fund will be
discussed.
On March 30, 2010, Attorney Jamie Ray-Leonetti will
attend a quarterly meeting of the Business Advisory Council
(BAC). The BAC is sponsored by the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society, Greater Delaware Valley Chapter and
focuses on ensuring that the employment needs of people with
MS are met.
January 2010
Attorneys Pennington & Ray-Leonetti assisted a woman with
multiple sclerosis in obtaining social security disability
benefits. The benefits were initially denied due to lack of
medical evidence but with the help of Attorney Ray-Leonetti, a
doctors report was obtained to establish the extent of the
limitations caused by the MS.
December 2009
Attorneys Pennington &
Ray-Leonetti assisted a woman with learning disabilities in
obtaining unemployment compensation. The benefits were initially
denied on the basis of willful misconduct. The Referee found no
willful misconduct because the employee performed her job to the
best of her ability and the employer did not meet its burden to
establish any willful misconduct.
November 2009
Attorneys Pennington and Ray were successful in obtaining
unemployment compensation benefits for an area retail store
employee who was initially denied benefits based upon alleged
violations of company policy. The Referee found no evidence of
any such violations.
October 2009
Attorneys Pennington and Ray helped obtain SSI benefits for a
Philadelphia couple over age 65.
Attorneys Pennington and Ray assisted a Philadelphia resident
with cancer in maintaining her SSDI benefits through social
security's periodic disability review process.

Jamie Ray-Leonetti joined the MS Society Greater Delaware
Valley Chapter in forming a new "Business Advisory Council"
(BAC). This Council is part of the new "MS works" program,
dedicated to helping people with Multiple Sclerosis work.
August 2009
Attorneys Pennington and Ray assisted a Philadelphian
with multiple disabilities in obtaining unemployment
compensation benefits when his employer terminated him for
alleged job abandonment, but failed to accommodate his
disabilities. Attorney Ray succeeded in getting a Referee
to rule that the employee had engaged in no "willful
misconduct" when he took time off due to disabilities.
January 2009: Pennington
- Ray-Leonetti
obtained social security disability benefits for a
Philadelphian with developmental disabilities. SSI benefits
were also obtained for a Philadelphia woman with multiple
disabilities including heart disease, fibromyalgia and
chronic pain syndrome.
Attorney Steve Pennington to Testify
Regarding H.B. 80
On July 28, 2008, Steve Pennington will testify before the
Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee concerning H.B. 80.
H.B. 80 supports the creation of mental health courts
throughout Pennsylvania.
On May 29, 2008, Attorney Jamie Ray-Leonetti
testified in support of Pennsylvania H.B. 1743. This Bill
would create a mentoring program for Pennsylvania workers
who are "welfare to work" participants.
Attorney Steve Pennington is honored
as a member of the 2008 Leadership Class of the Greater
Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society. The class recognizes community leaders who support
the fight against MS.

Veteran's Benefits Along with the firm of Williams Cuker
Berezofsky, attorneys Pennington & Ray have obtained
benefits for the widow of a Vietnam War veteran. She claimed
death benefits, asserting that her husband's base of the
tongue cancer had been caused by his exposure to Agent
Orange. She was denied benefits by the Board, which gave
credence to a VA expert who urged that the treating doctor's
differential diagnosis be rejected, and who opined that
while a positive risk has been found between tongue and
other pharyngeal cancers and Agent Orange, the risk ratio
was not statistically significant, and, therefore, could not
support causation. The Court of Appeals for Veterans'
Affairs found that such a holding was "clearly erroneous",
and reversed and remanded with instructions that the Board
award benefits "expeditiously"
Pennington - Ray-Leonetti recently succeeded in
an SSDI claim for a Wilkes-Barre woman with multiple
sclerosis. The claim was denied at the application level
because the medical file was incomplete.
On December 26, 2007, attorneys
Pennington and Ray_Leonetti were notified that their Lancaster County
client with multiple physical disabilities would be awarded SSDI benefits.
Pennington - Ray-Leonetti were recent
presenters at the 2007 NAMI PA Annual Conference in
Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Pennington and Ray addressed the
topic "Criminal History and background checks in the
workplace: what you need to know". Attorney Pennington also
participated in the conference's "criminal justice
symposium".
Attorney Steve Pennington succeeded in
having the disorderly conduct conviction of a 12 year old
with ADHD overturned on the basis that his conduct was in no
way "obscene" as required by the section of the law he was
charged with violating.
Attorney Jamie Ray-Leonetti recently spoke to a
group of people with MS and their families at an event
hosted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Central
Pennsylvania Chapter. Attorney Ray shared information about
how to apply for social security disability, and how to
appeal a denial of social security disability benefits.

Attorney Ms. Jamie C. Ray-Leonetti,
Esquire, recently participated in the 31st Institute on
Rehabilitation Issues (IRI), a study group which wrote and
produced a publication titled "Leading and Managing Change
in Public Vocational Rehabilitation". The IRI consists of 15
individuals from across the United States. Participants are
nominated by the United States Department of Education,
Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA).
Pennington - Ray-Leonetti secured continued paratransit eligibility for a Philadelphia woman with
multiple disabilities including cerebral palsy. The firm
worked closely with the individual, her family and her
healthcare providers to obtain the information necessary to
succeed at the administrative hearing.
Pennington - Ray-Leonetti succeeds in
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) appeal for Philadelphia
woman with severe vision impairments and cancer. In August
2006, The firm of Pennington -Ray assisted this long time
Philadelphia resident in receiving these benefits. The firm
worked diligently to obtain complete medical records and
ensured that they were available to social security, leading
to the success of the appeal.
